Research Projects
COMMITTEE FOR OSTEOPATHIC RESEARCH (COR)
Introduction
Objectives CORPP’s principal occupation concerns the scientific investigation in osteopathic medicine. Pursuing the development of osteopathy into a valuable mode of treatment and taking into account the progress of knowledge within the professional group, it is necessary to investigate the mechanisms and the efficiency of osteopathic medicine. Some people think that a successful marriage of osteopathy and science is impossible. This point of view is mainly based on prejudices. It probably results from a protectionistic point of view and from a lack of scientifically qualified persons within the professional group. They should be admitted in a proper faculty or create an osteopathic faculty at a university, with all accompanying possibilities for scientific research. When we find studies with the conviction of the importance of a fundamental and clinical research in the field of osteopathic medicine, we find that these often suffer from lack of appropriate controls, inconsistent methodology, lack of quantifiable and disease-specific outcome measures, low statistical power and few publications outside of the mainstream medical literature. We have the conviction that, in an European cooperating spirit, a project oriented scientific research within the osteopathic medicine is the right way to provide that medicine with the scientific substructure it deserves. This resulted in the foundation of CORPP, and peculiarly in the foundation of COR (s. CORPP’s Structurograms). COR’s general objective is to facilitate the collective efforts of the osteopathic profession to investigate the mechanism of action and clinical efficacy of osteopathic medicine. Although a simple statement, it is an immense and complex task. The specific objectives, in order to realize this task, are: The development of a structure permitting the guide of scientific research. The development, elaboration and guidance of scientific research. Here we find four forms of research:
The development of a database as a ‘market of knowledge’ within the osteopathic medicine.
Organisation
The research-part of CORPP is under leadership of COR, the Committee for Osteopathic Research, and is assisted by an EBSC, an External Board of Scientific Counsellors. Beside the EBSC, there is a FOSR, a Fund for Osteopathic Scientific Research.
COR – Committee for Osteopathic Research In the first instance COR functions as a Think Tank providing the management and the research-priorities. COR persues the development of cooperation between osteopathic schools, organisations and individuals in the scientific research of osteopathic medicine. COR also initiates and collaborates in research projects. COR groups osteopaths DO with an academic title and/or sufficient experience in scientific research. At least twice a year COR holds a meeting. News reports give information about the status of the reasearch projects.
EBSC – External Board of Scienitific Counselors The task of the EBSC consists in a critical evaluation of COR’s work. At the same time the members of the EBSC hold themselves at the disposal for critical analysis and improvement of standards for research design and methodology.
FOSR – Fund for Osteopathic Scientific Research The FOSR provides the necessary funds for the support of the scientific research via as many channels as possible. The FOSR receives its funds from: membership contributions; 70% of COPra’s profits; …
